As the first donor and active supporter of the AfroChampions Initiative, Samba Bathily, founder and CEO of ADS Group, joined the inaugural meeting of the AfroChampions Club in Lagos last weekend, organized by Mr Aliko Dangote, founder and CEO of the Dangote group, and Mr. Thabo Mbeki, Former President of the Republic of South Africa. With attendees representing 13 African countries, which made this inaugural meeting is a success. As a follows up, two strategic documents will be prepared: an overview of Club members’ proposals to support the creation of a continental free trade area (CFTA) in Africa and the drafting of an AfroChampions charter, which is aimed to better define what contribution major African multinationals may have to support Africa’s growth and development. Both documents will be presented at the next African Union summit in January 2018.
For Samba Bathily, “the AfroChampions Club is a major step forward. It is a new platform enabling economic leaders of the continent to meet on a regular basis and make innovative proposals. We have already been able to discuss how to mutualize funds for essential infrastructures, create an African passport or develop regional value chains. This is a great start. ”
