The ADS Group’s main objective is to actively contribute to the development of Africa. In order to accelerate growth, the first key challenge this continent needs to overcome is providing access to energy and water. This is the Group’s primary area of activity.

Although this may seem surprising to people from other regions, it must not be forgotten that 600 million Africans do not have access to electricity. The overall social and economic impact is serious: lack of electricity affects night time economic activities, safety, hospitals and women being able to carry out basic household tasks.

80% of schools in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and the Republic of Guinea lack access to electricity;

The existing power networks are so poor that they bridle growth by up to 2 points a year in some of Africa’s most dynamic regions such as East Africa.

Over 3.5 million Africans die every year from air pollution or fires in the home produced by costly and toxic solid fuels, unclean energy sources for cooking.

Equally, 400 million Africans have no access to clean drinking water; few irrigation systems have been developed affecting Africa’s ability to feed its population and generate exports; it is estimated that Africans spend around 140 million hours a year collecting water to meet their basic needs.

Samba Bathily personally works hard to address these issues.  He has spent many years developing solutions to provide access to clean and sustainable energy, hydro and solar power in particular.  He is behind the creation of Solektra International alongside the internationally renowned musician Akon and consultant Thione Niang.  Solektra International launched the Akon Lighting Africa initiative to bring electricity to rural Africa. With a presence in 15 African countries today, through the Akon Lighting Africa initiative, Solektra International has laid out an ambitious development plan for Africa and other market expansion for 2016. Also new projects will go beyond the focus on electrification to include solutions for water access with irrigation systems and fountains.

SOLEKTRA INTERNATIONAL

“Solektra International’s mission is to respond to the African energy crisis by providing clean, renewable, and affordable energy solutions primarily in rural and off-grid areas positively impacting lives and changing one community at a time”.
The Akon Lighting Africa initiative is the most well-known project launched by Solektra International. It was implemented in 15 countries within two years: the success of this venture shows that electricity can be brought quickly to Africa if the right technical resources are provided. Equipment such as solar powered street lamps, domestic and community kits, and mini power stations have been installed in almost 500 localities in Africa to date, infusing the local communities with economic and social activities, thus creating both direct employment opportunities (operation and maintenance of the equipment) and indirect opportunities resulting from broader access to electricity.
Key partners: SUMEC, NARI, HUAWEI (China), GAUFF, LORENTZ (Germany) Vestergaard (Switzerland).
